Audition for Placement 2024-2025

All returning band students and all incoming 8th graders are required to submit an audition. Failure to do so will result in placement in the concert band class.

AUDITIONS WILL BE SUBMITTED THROUGH Google Docs. You must have a google account to submit.



Purpose of the Assessment

  • We will use the results of the assessment to help determine the placement in performing bands for next year

  • Students will be placed in Wind Ensemble(1st Period), Symphonic(2nd Period), or Concert Band(3rd Period)

Audition Scales

Students will perform 12 Major scales in the format from the 12 Major Scales sheet. Students will have a time limit of 2 Minutes. Students should perform as many scales in as many octaves as they can within the time limit. Scales must be performed with no finger mistakes to receive credit.

Priorities of Scales Audition

  • Beautiful sound and approach to instrument

  • Correct Notes

  • Correct Rhythm with an even steady tempo

  • Articulation: Tongue up and Slur Down

  • Tempo(Only play as fast as you can cleanly)

 

 

Fight Song Audition

Students will play the Kempner Fight Song taking the 2nd ending(No repeat). Students must perform the Fight Song at 120BPM to receive full credit. Students will receive up to 100 pts for the Fight Song audition. The Fight Song should be performed in a “March Style”. Staccato 8th notes, lifted quarters, and firm articulation should be used throughout.

Concert Uniforms 2024

Wind Ensemble, Symphonic Band, and Concert Band members will wear Concert Uniforms to the following performances:

Symphonic Pre-UIL, 3/28

Wind Ensemble Pre-UIL, 4/2

Spring Band Concert @ KHS Auditorium , April 8th

Symphonic UIL, 4/12

Wind Ensemble UIL, 4/19

Concert Uniforms: We have special performance clothing that is owned and maintained by Kempner High School through the annual school district budget, but there are additional items that the student is responsible for providing. These uniforms are expensive and they must last for another 7 years. Take care of them! We will wear the Concert Uniform for all Wind Ensemble, Symphonic Band, Concert Band, and Full Orchestra performances this semester.

Ladies will be fitted in a black concert dress supplied by KHS, but they will need to supply black closed toe shoes.

Gentleman will be fitted in tuxedo jackets and pants supplied by KHS, but they will need to supply their own white tux shirt and black bow tie, as well as black socks and black dress shoes (you may wear your marching shoes) . A black cummerbund is optional but not required.

Please have theses items by the end of Spring Break!

Other Considerations when in Concert Uniform;

  • No jewelry

  • No wild hair colors

  • No eating while in uniform

Solo & Ensemble Contest 2025

Monday, May 19th

All Band students are required to play a Solo for contest(Except Color Guard). Participation will count as a double major grade. Students unable to attend in person due to health concerns will have to play their solo in front of class.

Students need to arrive to Kempner on May 15th at least 15 minutes prior to their performance time. Upon arrival students will go to the commons and assemble their instrument and warm-up. At their performance time they will go to the location indicated on the performance schedule and play their solo for a judge. Family members are welcome to sit in and watch the performance.

Schedule

Dress

Students need to dress in performance attire. No jeans, No T-Shirts, No shorts, No tennis shoes.

ccccch student plays they need to introduce themselves. “Hello, my name is_____. I will be playing______ composed by_______.”

Rating

Students will receive a rating based on their performance. Division 1, 2, 3, or 4. Students who receive a division 1 rating will receive a medal. After your performance, results will be distributed in Mr. Brodt’s office along with medals.

Pass-Off Assignments

All students are required to turn in 4 pass-off assignments on Schoology on their solo. Students are to record themselves playing the assignment and submit in schoology. Each assignment will count as a Major Grade. Late submissions will only count as partial credit. TURN IN ASSIGNMENTS ON TIME!!!

  • Feb 16th- 16 measures of solo

  • Mar 8th- Half of solo

  • April 5th- Entire solo

  • April 26th- Entire solo with recorded accompaniment
